One foot in front of the other

The first week of this year we closed on 10 acres and an old house, a dream come true! In many ways ‘dream’ isn’t really the right word, or perhaps it was the right word before it became reality. Now it is a dream no longer, but reality. When it is a dream it seems like it will be fantastic, perhaps hard to feel the realness of it. But when the realness comes, the ‘dream’ becomes the future once again. In other words, dreams are always in the future, fantasies become today’s work, and the time has come to get things done! Lots of things.

Removing plastic from the propagation house at the old site.

The first major thing was/is to take down our hoophouses and move them. A daunting task to think about but in reality is a matter of just putting your head down for a few hours at a time and before you know it, you’re just about there. We’ve taken down two out of three and have moved them. The third hoop house is staying put since we’ve found someone who hill be taking over that garden and wants to buy the hoophouse from us. Win-win since we will use that money to put towards a larger hoophouse that will match one we have.

Cross fence to be removed at the new place

The next step was removing some cross fencing at the new site to make room for putting up the hoophouses. The old fence was about as decrepit as you can find with some newer t-posts to keep it up. A post puller borrowed from a friend made quick work of the t-posts, and the wood posts just tipped over since they had been rotten for years. The only challenging thing was staying motivated while getting soaked through from the downpour that morning.

Up next: putting the hoophouses back up!

(Video of my brother breaking the concrete footings off the hoophouse posts. Gotta have some fun while you’re working!)
